内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 One of the classes that the author taught at junior college was “Japanese Expressions,” the goal of which was to acquire appropriate Japanese expression skills, namely conversation and writing skills. (The subject name has changed several times owing to curriculum revisions.) Childcare workers are required to have not only conversational skills but also writing skills, but most students are not aware of their writing skills. However, when students become children workers, they will be required to not only keep records of childcare but also write documents such as contact books and school newsletters to convey information accurately to third parties.
Therefore, to help students acquire a minimum level of writing ability by the time they graduate, students were asked to submit 400-character essays as weekly homework that were returned to them with feedback. The reasons for evaluating the essays were explained and guidance on how to write such essays provided during class. In addition, the students were asked to correct any inappropriate expressions and resubmit their essays after receiving feedback. Although it took a considerable amount of time to read all the essays, desirable results were achieved through this method. However, studentsʼ writing skills have exhibited a declining trend over the years, and there has recently been an increase in the number of sentences that made the author wonder, “What did they learn in elementary and junior high school?”
Further, while reading the essays, the author realized that there were more important and serious problems than simply the obvious mistakes of “simply not being able to write.” The reason for this was the fact that the author became the director of a childrenʼs center (originally opened as a nursery school) that his father founded in 1954 and had many opportunities to see childrenʼs activities at the nursery school. This study analyzes the essence of the problem and explores examples of childrenʼs activities.
